component of meaning is in fact expressed by the combination of yāḏa’ (know) with the Hebrew raq (“only”) and min (the partitive indicating separation: “from …”). In this combination of terms yāḏa’ has the sense of a “free and efficacious act of will.”14 This clarifies the issue that Bultmann leaves muddled. “To know” does not by itself imply election, though it can mark the intimate and special relationship God has with certain people. It may have elective significance when used with other elements.
